Introduction

Described as 'the pearl in the necklace of the castles of Hind' by the Mughal Emperor Babur, the Gwalior Fort , situated at Gopachal, almost 100m above the town of Gwalior, was built by Raja Man Singh Tomar in the 15th century.
Naturally every powerful ruler dreamt of possessing it.
This fort was owned by many rulers like the Tomars, Mughals, Marathas and British, who finally handed it over to the Scindias.

The Gwalior Fort has changed hands many times, from the Tomaras in the 8th century, to the Scindhias who were its masters when India became independent. and each of these dynasties adorned and embellished the fort.
One cannot help being impressed with the perfect blend of the Hindu and Muslim architecture that characterises the fort and finds its fullest expression in this brilliant monument.

>> Location :- This fort is located in Gwalior, which is in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh, near its border with the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located on a hill to the north of LASHKAR, the new town of Gwalior.

>> Climate :- It is hot during the summers (April to June), with temperatures touching 40oC . Monsoon lasts from July to Sept. The winters are mild. However, the nights can be cold.

Tourist Attraction

>> Jai Vilas Palace : -
This Palace was built in 1809 and is located in new city of Gwalior. The present Maharaja of Gwalior resides heres.

>> Chaturbhuj Mandir: -
Also known as "the temple of four-armed", is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and was built in 876A.D. It is located on the northeast entrance to the fort. Near the fourth gate of the north east entrance to the fort is a small four pillared Hindu temple dedicated to the hermit GWALIPA, after whom the fort and the town is named.

>> Teli ka Mandir: -
This temple was built in the 9th century. The roof of the temple is built in the Dravidian style shrine and is notable for its generously sculpted exterior. The doorway to the temple is 10m high and is topped with a sculpture of the Garuda. The whole temple is covered with sculptures.

>> Saas Bahu Temple: -
These two temples were built between the 9th and 12th century. They are located near the eastern wall. The Mother- in –law and Daughter- in –law temples are similar in style. There are figures of Lord Vishnu over the entrance of the temple. Four huge pillars support the large roof.
